Parotid cancer, also known as salivary gland cancer, begins from the overgrowth of cells of the largest salivary glands. These organs produce saliva in your mouth. It frequently remains unnoticed for an extended period of time, as it typically does not present any symptoms in its initial stages.

What are the Symptoms of Parotid Cancer?

Parotid glands are located just in front of and below each ear. The symptoms can vary based on the size and aggressiveness of the tumour, but common signs to watch for include:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Numbness in part of the face
  • Changes in facial appearance
  • Difficulty opening the mouth fully
  • Pain in the area of the lump or ear etc.

What are the Causes of Parotid Cancer?

The exact risk factors of the occurrence of parotid cancer are not fully understood, but several risk factors are identified that may contribute to its development:

  • Viral infections
  • Genetic mutations
  • Radiation exposure
  • Tobacco and alcohol use
  • Benign salivary gland tumours etc.
